Background

The need for telling stories of social injustice… stories of the under-privileged, impoverished, and forgotten… has never been more paramount. With unprecedented amounts of philanthropic energy now part of popular culture, each and every one of us can help, even if just by paying attention to these circumstances, raising global awareness.

What is a human life worth? What do you do when you can’t go to a Sears or Home Depot? When it takes months, instead of days, for a delivery? Where there is no water? No doctors? No power? When local government officials are threatening to shut you down?

Objective

Clinics Rising was created to showcase the amazing challenges and triumphs of heroic healthcare workers around the globe. It was formed with the mission of telling the stories of non-government organizations (NGOs) doing the work on the ground, to improve and save lives, and heal the world.

  • Develop insight around the challenges of Global health care
  • Bring the public a visceral experience of the conditions on the ground
  • Help small underfunded NGOs with fundraising and development efforts
  • Develop learning materials for integration into curriculums

Clinics Rising uses a combination of rich media, traditional media, broadcast/film, audio and photojournalism to tell these compelling and often untold stories in the fight for world wide health care.

SUDAN UPDATE 2014

As Southern Sudan erupted into violence on December 15 of 2013, rebels loyal to ousted Vice President Riek Machar tried to stage a coup. Violence quickly spread, with reports of mass killings emerging nationwide. The conflict has been a huge blow for South Sudan, a far cry from the country President Salva Kiir declared in early December to be "open for business."

The recent insecurity in South Sudan has cut off the pipeline for food and essential supplies.  Because of these shortages, the price of food at the closest market to the Duk Lost Boys Clinic (which is about 30 miles away over extremely rough terrain) has doubled!  At the same time people fleeing violence are moving north toward the Duk Lost Boys Clinic.  Extreme shortages and increased patients can quickly create a humanitarian crisis in the region.

"The situation is dire," said executive director Daniel Pisegna. "If the clinic cannot get supplies in the coming weeks, the staff and patients of the Duk Lost Boys Clinic will suffer."
